How do small Servo Drives and Motor Controllers Work?

Miniature servo drives are designed with the latest technologies in transistor and integrated circuits technology in order to achieve the power and performance of traditional servo drives into a size that is typically a tenth of a standard motor controller. Small servo drive power stages use discrete or integrated half bridges with sometimes even bare die transistor to reduce the footprint of the product. In terms of processing the control loops, small servo drives make use of highly integrated processors that include DSP units as well as hardware peripherals to handle feedbacks and PRUs for fast deterministic communications.

Benefits of small servo drives

Small servo drives enable disruptive applications where size is a key factor for the application:

  • Direct integration into robotic axis joints.
  • Smaller form factor allows for distributed control and wiring reductions.
  • Lower standby power consumption lowers actuator temperature and enables applications where the axis is in close contact with humans.
  • The smaller the servo drive module, the more axis can be fit on a comparable enclosure.
